The Leatherman Wave multitool is one tool I have with me whether I’m fishing or not. It’s saved my butt many times. If it’s not on your belt it should be in your tackle box. I added a stainless steel split ring and a caribiner to mine so I can hook it on my life vest when fishing from my kayak.
All the reviews on Amazon speak for themselves. Multitools can be found a lot cheaper but they can’t hold up to the test of time and abuse that the Wave has. I chose the wave over other models produced by Leatherman because the built in selection of tools covers everything I wanted to have on hand for fishing. Even when I’m not fishing it always seems to have something I can use.
Leatherman also stands behind everything they make no questions asked. Once you own one you’ll never want to be without it.

Product Description |
The Wave multitool's compact folded shape hides a wealth of tools and blades within. | The Wave Multitool From Leatherman: Better than Ever The most popular full-size Leatherman tool is now better than ever. Larger knives, stronger pliers, longer wire cutters and all-locking blades make the new Wave an essential piece of equipment for any job or adventure. The pliers have been redesigned to withstand more than double the previous squeezing load, and the new bronze bushing makes one-handed knife access a smooth operation -- plus, the one-at-a-time blade selection function means that the tool you want is the tool you get. The versatile Wave comes with a durable and attractive leather/nylon combination sheath. The Wave includes several screw bits for added versatility. |
| User Features This Wave model has four exterior blades that can be accessed even while the tool is closed. (Note: the knife blade can only be opened when the tool is closed.) You can open the blades with one hand by placing your thumb in the thumbhole at the base of the blade, and rotating until the knife is fully extended. This securely engages the locking mechanism. The saw and file both have nail nicks at their tips for easy access. The locking mechanism is marked with a padlock symbol on the tool itself. To unlock the blades, all you have to do is press the locking mechanism toward the handle until the blade slides past the lock. Accessing the interior features is a snap, too -- just grip the handles and rotate them open. Each interior blade can be opened by using the nail nicks. The scissors extend in the very same way, and they lock into place for secure, safe use. And of course, it's easy to change the tool bits, too. Just remove the bit from the driver and pop a new one into place. Optional Accessories (not included)
Expand your Wave's capabilities with the Bit Kit, offering 21 double-ended bits. Or, you can add a pocket clip and quick-release lanyard ring. What's in the box:
The Leatherman Wave multitool and a leather/nylon combination sheath. Warranty

What's not to like?
|
| Review Date: November 10, 2005 |
| Reviewer: T. Hassler, |
One thing that chaps my hide is a cheap tool. I don't like 'em, I don't buy 'em and I avoid using them if I don't have to. Leatherman is well known for their quality and they don't disappoint here.
Good Points:
This New Wave is extremely well built.
Resists torque/twisting that some other multi-tools don't.
Nice heft, but not too heavy to slip in a pocket.
Smooth and comfortable finish in the hand.
A really nice selection of functional tools.
Great tool locking, easy to release (but only when you want!)
I've used several other multi-tools and beyond the novelty, I never really enjoyed the flip out style (Gerber) because it seemed a bit unstable and difficult to put back. And most of the others cut into the palm. The only detractor is the price, but I don't mind paying for quality and this baby delivers. |
Best of these kinds of multitools, great gift.

*** NOTE: I am reviewing the Leatherman Wave, not the company selling it. Please consider that when voting. ***
I had a great group of guys in my wedding party and I wanted to get them something they might use every day. Now, some of these guys already own multitools or have their own copies, but nobody owned a top-line model from Leatherman. In fact, I think they all had knockoffs.
The difference between a Leatherman and a cheap imitator is huge. Steel quality is measurably better, and tolerances are smaller, so your pliers really grip and your wire cutters really cut. I liked the screwdriver bit size, really slotted in tight on Phillips and slot screws.
Consider, though, that it's a massive tool, so it's reaches the limit (and good arguments are made for exceeding the limit) of usable size and weight, but if you wanted a tool for the work truck or to hang off your work belt "just in case", this and a flashlight are definitely the best "just in case" tools you can own. It does come with a belt case, and the keyring is large enough to take a decent carabiner for clipping onto a belt or a work area for use.
Worth the cost? I'm not sure it's worth it to many, but if you have to own the best multitool possible, you have to consider this as a strong choice. The premium makes this a tremendous gift because it is a fine quality tool. It's usually not something one buys for one's self ("I can live with a cheaper one")... once you get one, you can't ever go back to the knockoffs... you've been properly spoiled.

Simply superb

| Reviewer: D. Buckner, |
Although now retired, I spent my adult life in the Army (infantry) and law enforcement. A good multitool is indispensable in either profession. Over the course of my careers, I had numerous multitools. None of them compared to the Leatherman Wave.
I received a Leatherman Wave last year as a gift, just in time for Hurricane Katrina. I spent some months in and around the disaster area doing rescue work, and can't tell you how many times I used this superb tool.
Both of the knife blades, plain and serrated, were heavily used and I found them to be up to any task. They were razor sharp and kept a keen edge through the toughest jobs. The pliers and wirecutter performed very well, too. I occasionally used the saw blade and found it to be useful, as well. I used the screwdrivers from time to time and, although not as good as a dedicated screwdriver, they performed better than I expected.
All in all, I am pleased with my Leatherman Wave and would not hesitate to highly recommend this superb tool to anyone in need of a tough, durable multitool. |

| I was given this leatherman as a gift. didn't really think much of it at first. a friend who works for the local PD explained how good it really was. the blades are extremely sharp and versatile. he has used the blade cut people free of their seatbelts in car wrecks. the phillips screw-driver looks weak but workes excellent. the small screwdriver is perfect for tightening the screw on eyeglasses. the pliers are exceptional and come in handy on various projects. all in all extremely pleased with the product and would highly reccomend. |
A Serious, Intelligently-Engineered Tool
|
| Review Date: September 25, 2005 |
| Reviewer: adroitus, Beaverton, OR USA |
I have had two other Leathermans (Leathermen?) prior to this one, and I think this tool exhibits a level of design and engineering that surpasses them. I had an original Leatherman PST and a Juice S2. The original was competently done but was not as refined as the New Wave. The Juice S2 was an almost perfect compromise between size and features, but it always annoyed me that the two halves were asymetrical. I gave the PST to my father-in-law, and the T.S.A. took my Juice, which prompted me to get the New Wave.
I haven't had to do any big jobs with the Wave, but I use it at least once a day for something. What I like best about it is the sophistication of the design and the quality of the construction, and the little touches that make it so satisfying to use.
For example, I love the one-handed opening knife blades. (The only shortcoming I can see is that they are designed for right-handers only.) The way they integrated them into a tool like this is genius. When I first got it I liked them a lot, but was a bit frustrated because I never knew which blade I was opening, the serrated or the drop-point. Then one day I noticed that the back of the serrated blade was notched, and the back of the drop-point blade was smooth. There it was, a solution to my problem already designed into the tool. The little touches like that make me very satisfied with my New Wave. |

Many times while surf fishing or inshore fishing, the crabs are notorious for stealing your bait. The Palsa Pinch On Floats solves this problem nicely. Put a pack of these in your tackle box and use them anytime you have a problem.
Just peel off the backing, wrap the foam around your leader near the hook and pinch it together. Use one or more as needed to keep the bait just out of reach.
You can of course buy ready made surf rigs with floats already on them. Most surf anglers however, like to make their own surf rigs. That’s where the pinch on floats come in handy. You only use them when you need them.

Depending on the surf conditions and the desired casting distance choose a pyramid sinker between 3oz. and 5oz. It’s not as big of a problem when surf fishing beyond the breakers. But if you are targeting fish within the surf where the waves are breaking the sinker has to be heavy enough to prevent it from washing ashore.
At times even a 5oz. or 6oz. pyramid sinker won’t hold for you. If the surf is that rough your only choice will be to try a sputnik or break away sinker. Most of the time however, you’ll get by with heavier lead.
Pyramid sinkers of course are made heavier than 6oz. but your surf rod might not be rated to sling the beefier weight. Every surf rod has a sweet spot for the weight you use. If you try to go outside that range it won’t cast well at all.
Keep a range of pyramid sinkers on hand within the rating of your surf rod along a couple of sputnik type sinkers and you’ll be prepared for 90% of the surf conditions you’ll be up against.

The Storm Jig’n eel is a favorite choice for stripers, bluefish, cobia and weakfish. This artificial bait works great for surf fishing at night. Wade out and cast parallel to the beach, work the jig’n eel slowly along the shoreline or sand bar.
Many predator fish in the surf have nocturnal feeding habits especially under a full moon. They come in closer to the shoreline to feed at night. The bigger fish will be well within within casting distance during this time. Fish the high tide when the big feeders come in for a meal.
If you like to have the beach all to yourself for some killer action, night time fishing is the way to go. The Storm Jig’n eel has such a life like presentation it will get a lot of attention.

The D.O.A. Shrimp is one of the artificial baits that every surf fishing angler needs in their tackle box.
The D.O.A. Shrimp will catch any fish that will strike on a live shrimp. I’m referring to Redfish, Tarpon, Jacks and all the other predator game fish caught surf fishing. If you can catch it on live shrimp you can substitute the D.O.A. shrimp.
Live bait should always be your first choice. However live bait isn’t always available and you always run out when the bite is on.
Fish the D.O.A shrimp on a fishfinder rig. Substitute the pyramid sinker for an egg sinker so it doesn’t bite into the bottom. Work it slowly through the strike zone you are fishing. Give it a twitch now and then to give it a natural action.
For more natural presentation, cut off the tip of the tail and rig the hook from the rear. Shrimp swim backward not forward the way it comes rigged. Use a Daiichi screw holder hook in a 3/0 or 4/0 size.

Get all your surf fishing gear down to the beach in one trip. Keep all your gear together organized in one spot. There’s plenty of room for bait, refreshments, rods and tackle boxes.
The saltwater environment is harsh. A good surf fishing cart needs to be made with a non corrosive material. Aluminum, PVC or stainless steel are all good choices.
If the beach where you fish doesn’t allow vehicles you’ll want something that holds all your gear and move easily to a new spot to fish. A larger cart will have enough room for you and a friend to get your gear to the water.
Sometimes a big cart can be a little cumbersome. There are some nice two wheel versions too. One size doesn’t fit all. You’ll have to decide for yourself.
The surf fishing cart listed below from Amazon seems to be popular among the surf angler I see at the beach. Be sure to read the description below it has a lot of great features. I have to give it 5 stars.

Coast lock snap swivels are the only kind you should ever consider using for surf fishing. Regular snap swivels will often open up while fighting a fish. You can’t depend on them.
Coast locks come with a test strength rating. You can size them to the strength of the leader you plan to use. They’re not that expensive when it comes to loosing a trophy fish.

PowerPro braided line is gaining a lot of popularity. You can’t beat it for surf fishing. It has no stretch which means you get positive hook sets. If you were to use monofiliment line the stretch in the line might not allow a hook set at all depending on the fish, especially with a lot of line out in the water.
Tarpon have very hard jaws. Even when using braid it’s hard to get the hook set.
Another advantage of braided line is the ability to spool more line on your reel because the line diameter is a lot smaller than the equivalent test strength in monofiliment. You can easily double the reel capacity when you switch over to PowerPro braid.
Powerpro’s easy spool pack makes it easy to spool a reel without line twist.

For surf fishing you would want to use the ABF65 or the ABF90. They are a little bit more expensive than the smaller ABF models but they will land just about anything you will hook surf fishing. Especially the big game.
If you want to get into shark fishing this reel will get the job done.
As long as you use the baitfeeder feature you’ll never worry about a pull over. Without this feature there’s always a risk you could loose your whole rig.

Product Description |
| The Okuma Avenger "ABF" baitfeeder spinning reel reflects a refinement and precision that is the culmination of a decade of research and development. It is a unique combination of tournament grade spinning reel and Okuma's patented live line bait feeding system. The Avenger "ABF" series puts a new spin on the traditional world of reels, and more importantly, what can be expected from them. Quite simply, these are ultra smooth, precision crafted reels. The light weight CNC machined spools are fitted with super smooth oil-soaked felt washers. The reel features six sealed ball bearings, for smooth operation. The Avenger ABF uses Okuma's live bait feeding system. The easy-to-reach lever (located on the body behind the handle) disengages the spool to allow the line to run freely. The tension of the free spool can be adjusted with the rear adjustment (which looks and works like a rear drag). The bait feeding system allows a fish to pick up the bait and run without feeling the drag of the reel. When you are ready to set the hook, you flip down the baitfeeder lever to engage the drag, and the conventional front drag takes over. |
